FEAST DAY
Yesterday we celebrated our school feast day with Mass and fun activities for the students. It was a most enjoyable day for the students and with Fr Wilson in great form sharing his knowledge of St Kieran as the first Irish born saint and the reasons for the name being used for the parish. Students have commenced work with buddy classes on the creation of a brick design that will commemorate each student who is currently at St Kieran in 2020. These bricks, together with those purchased by families later in the year will form part of a new garden area where the current Grotto now stands, which will commemorate the centenary of the school.
UPGRADES
In the past few weeks, we have completed an upgrade of the PA system in the undercover area that has been specially designed for this space, which includes a dedicated sound system, extra speakers and a number of both handheld and hands-free microphones. We hope that this makes the experience of school assemblies more enjoyable for our parents and students, with greater spoken clarity coming through the speakers.
You may have also noticed several extra spotlights connected to the undercover area during the recent Kieran Connect Picnic. These have been installed across the school to allow night events to be conducted without the need for the external lighting system. We have also recently upgraded the hand dryers in the main toilet block. These have attracted a great deal of attention by the children as they are a different shape and have replaced much older and noisy units.
PARENT- TEACHER MEETINGS
Parent-Teacher meetings times are now live in the app or via this link. Each session will provide up to 15 minutes with your class teacher who will provide you with information about how your child has started the term academically, socially and in regards to their work habits.
Each year we have approximately 20% of parents who do not engage with these meetings which we see as a vital part of our reporting of student progress.
We see your child's education as a shared responsibility between home and school and need each parent or guardian to take the time to listen about their child's progress and to provide further insight to the class teacher about their child, how they learn and the ways that they can work together to best support the learning needs of their child.
Looking forward to seeing our students and parents on Monday 9 March 2020 at the rescheduled Faction Swimming Carnival at Craigie Leisure Centre.
Have a great weekend!

Packed with Goodness talk feedback
On Friday 21st February St Kieran hosted a Healthy Lunchbox Parent information Session called “Packed with Goodness.” Sonia White from the Cancer Council delivered an informative and though provoking session teaching us all about the importance of fruit and vegies for kids, tips for packing a healthy lunchbox, healthy alternatives to pre-packaged snacks, label reading and the best drink choices for kids.
Here is some feedback from some participants.
“The session was very beneficial to me particularly insights on how to check the sugar/salt levels on food labels. Am glad I attended.”
“It was a really informative session. I had a few take home messages which I’ve since been implementing:
- Switch to reduced fat dairy (all dairy!),
- Increase options like eggs, chicken, baked beans or leftovers in lunchboxes,
- White high fibre bread or fruit toast are actually quite healthy choices,
- Reading labels on products for fat, sugar and salt content,
- Substituting some of the fruit I am including in lunchboxes for veg instead, as we’re often good at providing enough serves of fruit in a day. It would be great to repeat it again in the future.”
Thank you to all those who attended and participated in the information session. If you are interested in further information, please view the Crunch and sip website https://www.crunchandsip.com.au/
We hope to host this event again in the future, so if you missed out this time please keep an eye out for the next date!
