Three weeks in and the children have done a great job of starting the year off on the right note. The levels of engagement in class are high and we appreciate your ongoing support of the teaching program. Working collaboratively with staff can only enhance the situation for all students.
This year we have had an enormous following for choir and have two groups, Year 2-3 for the junior choir and Year 4-6 for the senior choir with over 70 children wishing to be part of the groups, which is amazing! Thank you for supporting this initiative and allowing it to expand to its current point.
This week school fees were sent out to the email addresses provided to us for this purpose. If you have not received your annual fee statement, wish to discuss your account or would like to book an appointment with the Principal, contact the accounts department by email accounts@stkieran.wa.edu.au or phone the school office. We understand that circumstances can change and would like to offer help to any family in need.
This evening the Kieran Connect family night will be in full flight! A very big thank you to our Year 2 and 6 parents who have coordinated and organised an amazing event for our entire community. Please see below for further information about the night.
Next week our Year 6 students, together with staff will spend three days at the annual Year 6 camp. This is a great opportunity for students to experience learning in a new environment, one which also helps staff learn more about students in a different setting. We hope for great weather and plentiful opportunities for the children over the three days. We greatly appreciate the willingness of staff to give of their personal time to ensure the success of the camp.
Also next week our annual faction swimming carnival will be held at the Craigie Leisure Centre for Years 4-6. Information regarding the event has already been sent out and all queries should be directed to Mr Hort via the school office.
At parent meetings last week we discussed how we require communication to occur, to allow for urgent messages to be received promptly and to ensure that vital information is not missed. If you need to send absentee information, change of information for pickups or information that is important for the teacher to be aware of during the day, this should be sent to admin@stkieran.wa.edu.au to ensure that it is received promptly. Teachers during the day will be teaching, on duty during break time or maybe offsite and unable to access emails. The office is always manned and the emails checked on a regular basis during the day. If you require a prompt response then sending it via the office will be your best option. Also, if you email a staff member then please anticipate that it may take up to 24 hours for a response. If you don't receive a response in this time frame then please follow it up with the staff member through the school office. Please remember that we are human and may have not been able to get to your request as we are dealing with other issues.
Look forward to seeing you later this evening!

Ash Wednesday - next week 26/2/20
Next week we will celebrate Ash Wednesday, which begins the forty day season of Lent that leads to Easter. On Ash Wednesday, we come together to remind ourselves that we don’t always follow God’s ways and need to ask God for His mercy and forgiveness. Like God’s people in the time of the prophets, we wear ashes to show that we want to turn away from whatever keeps us from God, so that we can live in a closer relationship with God and each other.
Students are encouraged to think of things they could do to become closer to God. e.g. have conversations with God, do good deeds and give to Project Compassion. As adults we understand these acts to be FASTING, PRAYER and ALMSGIVING.
For Catholics, Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstaining from meat. Fasting reminds us that food alone cannot make us happy. We must also be fed with prayer, with God’s Word and by meeting Jesus in the Sacraments, especially Reconciliation and Eucharist. Students under the age of 14 are not required to fast during Lent. The small sacrifices we make during Lent make room in our hearts to welcome the risen Jesus at Easter. Please take some time to talk with your children about the meaning of Lent and discuss together what could be a meaningful sacrifice for this time.
Lenten Thought
Remember the concept of not only ‘giving up’ during Lent, but ‘taking up.’
What can we ‘take up’ that will improve our lives and the lives of others this Lent?
Come and join in a great night of family fun and amusment at the Kieran Connect Family Night
