St Kieran Sustainability News

Thanks to the City of Stirling Living Green Schools Program our school has become the proud new owners of a recycled fridge worm farm and compost tumbler! The City of Stirling has provided us with some support and funds to assist us with moving forward in becoming a sustainable school.

Worm Farm

Kevin from the Worm Shed delivered the farm, worms and all the accessories needed to help us implement a sustainable waste management system for our Crunch and Sip food waste. The Year 6 Pillar Leaders assisted with setting up the worm farm and learnt how to feed and care for the worms. In addition, we have purchased a compost tumbler to help make compost from excess food waste and leaf litter so we can improve the soil quality our veggie patch. We are very excited to have these systems set up to help us improve and protect our environment.

Plastic Free July Challenge

As part of our school’s commitment to becoming more sustainable we recently conducted an audit to discover much single use plastic was packed in our lunchboxes. Our initial results showed that in one single day we had approximately 850 pieces of single use plastic waste going into the bin. That is a lot of rubbish that goes into landfill!

When we participated in the Plastic Free July challenge on July 1st, we were able to reduce that amount of waste to only 346 pieces of single use plastic waste.

Whilst that number is still quite high it is a significant reduction in waste and proves that we can make a difference and do our bit to help the environment. We will continue with Waste Free Wednesday for the remainder of the year. Well done St Kieran keep up the great work!

Other Recycling Programs

Don’t forget that our school also recycles
- Nespresso coffee pods
- old mobile phones
- household batteries (dry cell batteries include AA, AAA (single use or       rechargeable)  C, D, button batteries, 9V, 6V
- cordless power tools

If you have any of these items to recycle students can bring these into their classroom teacher who will place them in the correct recycling bins.

Thank you for your support in helping us become a more sustainable school.
