Year Five Writing- Persuasive Texts
The Year Five students have been writing persuasive texts with a topic of plastic use and waste. Below we have a few of the completed pieces. Some great thought-provoking pieces. Well Done to Savanna, Chibasa and Carlos S.
Stop using plastic!
Have you ever thought about all the plastic that ends up in the sea? People sometimes think that all the plastic can be reusable, but instead it goes into the sea and hurts animals. All the plastic in the sea leads to damage to our waterways, beaches and parks by killing and hurting our lovely creatures. Plastic is also a non- biodegradable substance for our generations, as 5 trillion plastic bags need to be banned, so it helps the animals. As a society, we should change. It’s time to take a stand against plastic pollution today!
First of all, our oceans, waterways and parks are getting blocked from way too much plastic bags and people’s litter, and it’s causing blocked drains and a messy environment. Do you know that over 5 trillion plastic bags get used over a year and marine animals can come and eat the plastic? We have the research and proof to tell people that fish and other sea fish can die. We need to stop using plastic and this is how we can stop, maybe get more reusable stuff and clean your kitchen and get all plastic out of your house. So remember don’t use plastic, help our sea creatures.
Secondly, plastic bags are non- biodegradable. They are made from chemically- based compounds that take up to 700-1000 years to break down. These chemicals cause harm to our food chain. When this happens, plastic bags break down into tiny pieces that damage the soil of where we grow our food. It should not surprise us because we don’t remember to bring bags that we can reuse and bottles are a big problem. Keep some in your car, so you can take them to the shops if we can just keep remembering then we might help sea creatures. So keep it up.
Finally, we must be thinking about how we use other stuff like coffee cups and do you know that 16 billion disposable plastic coffee cups are used each year. Which is not good because we don’t use metal coffee cups. We can help this by taking our own coffee cup to the restaurant when you go to have a coffee. Remember to become plastic savvy by recycling at home.
Another point of view is that plastic makes our life harder. Because we have to keep picking up all plastic waste. We know that plastic is made out of oil through producers that make plastic. It also takes up over 500 million greenhouse gases which reduces air quality. It also can hurt animals and, harms our future for kids.
As you can tell, plastic bags have no positive effect on our environment but they are not sustainable for our future and our animals. Plastic is a waste and causes devastation to our waterways, beaches parks shops and kills our lovely animals. We can improve on plastic waste by doing some better stuff at home. We should definitely keep remembering to take reusable coffee cups and reusable bags, you need to make a big difference with drink bottles by taking reusable drink bottles and this will help the future. That’s how we can help the environment. However, how are you going to help the environment?

Why plastic bags should be banned!
Have you ever thought about what happens when you don’t reuse a non-biodegradable item? People often use single-use items then instead of reusing them they throw it away and think it doesn’t hurt our environment but they are absolutely wrong. All plastics are not sustainable because they are partially made out oil and use up our oil supply each year!
First off, our environment, parks and beaches are now having to be cleaned up because of how we are no longer reusing or recycling plastic. We know that most of our waterways and oceans are being polluted and are killing or entangling our precious marine life. This is catastrophic for our future generations that will always live in a world polluted with plastic at land and sea.
Secondly, plastic bags are non- biodegradable. This means the process for it to break down will take 10-1000 years to decompose. This product is really not only made out of oil because they use chemicals and make it into a product that should be bought and make sure that people know that it’s a chemical free product. Previously mentioned, plastics aren’t good for our world because if it broke down into our world we would be breathing and if it got inside our body we would be breathing tiny microscopic plastic particles.
Convincingly, plastics are killing our precious marine life and are burning the insides of the fish. In the ocean, about 0.97- 2.7 trillion fish are killed by plastics every year. If we don’t save marine life many families will never get to enjoy fishing on the weekend.
Although, plastic isn’t sustainable for our world it’s also part of our lifestyle and can help us with certain things. Even though, these chemically absorbed items help us, haven’t you been thinking about 21 years from now? Over the years our ocean that is blue will turn silver with lots of plastic. This result is from our un-savvy ways today. There are scientists that aren’t certain on when our world will be rid of gyres. But in my opinion, we should save our world and recycle or stop using plastic items altogether!
As you can see, plastics bags cause a negative effect on our world as they destroy most of our beaches and oceans, and definitely poison our marine life. We can take a stand and make a big difference by doing a couple of things. The first thing we can do is bring a reusable item like a green shopping bag and we can also buy a non-plastic coffee cup and a reusable water bottle. If we do these things we can save our environment. Don’t you want to save our world?

Stop Plastic Production!
Do you want to help destroy the beauty of this world? If you do destroy this world everyone will blame it on you. I know that I would hate for that to happen so these are three reasons I want to talk to you about. What we should stop doing, is littering. If we don’t, it will blocks our waterways eventually making its way to the ocean and killing our marine life. Another problem is that plastic is non-biodegradable, which means it can’t break down and become part of the earth. So let’s stop plastic production for the sake of the earth.
Firstly, our oceans are full of plastic and they are creating gyres (piles of garbage and plastic in our oceans). Research shows that 8-10% of the world’s oil supply is
used each year to create plastic. Imagine all the plastic in the ocean that fish are mistaking for food or getting entangled in it. So you may not be convinced but if you didn’t know, scientists and even Google say that in 1970 there was 6 tonnes of plastic in the ocean but now there is 8 trillion tonnes of plastic, so let’s try our best to reduce 60 tonnes of plastic.
Secondly, our waterways are full of plastic. Next time you decide to put plastic in the bin try to wash it or repair it because it has been researched that plastic is
blocking our waterways and is becoming a major cause of flooding which can be a real problem in countries especially in Bangladesh. So don’t be wasteful, be
recyclable.
Finally, plastic bags are non-biodegradable which means it can’t break down and become part of the earth. Scientists can prove that plastic can take between
10-1000 years to dissolve which is a real problem. People are actually eating plastic because fish eat plastic and we eat fish. Let’s work together to get a healthier
environment.
On the other hand, plastic bags are a good help for humans because they can hold your shopping or carry your coffee and your birthday cake in. But this is still not a
good enough reason why plastic is still being made because they are still non-biodegradable, they are still blocking our waterways and they are still killing our
marine species. So be a good recycler to stop plastic for the sake of the earth.
As we have explained, plastic has so much effect and is close to destroying our environment and has no positive effect. Because it has still blocked our waterways,
it has also killed many marine species and is still non-biodegradable. With the help of people, we could stop plastic but that is only if you are willing to. We could
stop plastic by bringing your own recyclable coffee cup and recyclable shopping bags. See, if we all play a little part we can save the earth.
So are you willing to do your part?
