ST KIERAN NEWS
WELCOME TO WEEK 3
This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal.
Donations to Project Compassion allows Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.
We are encouraging our St Kieran community to put compassion into action this Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion.
Each class will receive a Project Compassion box. The student leadership group, Faith Pillar, will be organising some whole school events to raise money.
Families can donate online via the Caritas Australia website at: lent.caritas.org.au
Saint Oscar Romero is our inspiration for Project Compassion 2021, so in his words let’s
“Aspire not to have more, but to be more!"
Parent Information Nights
Thank you to all the parents for coming along to support the staff and the students with the start of the year and the procedures that have been put in place through out each classroom. We appreciate the time you commit to these and thank you for doing so. If you have any questions through the year please don’t hesitate to contact the class teacher and if you ever need further clarity members of the Leadership Team are always on hand.
Emails and Communication
We are hoping that our communication issues are now behind us! Thank you so much for your patience and understanding at this time. Can you please adjust or save your emails to the following as all staff will use an email firstname.lastname@cewa.edu.au For example daine.burnett@cewa.edu.au or sally.hart@cewa.edu.au or sacha.doepel@cewa.edu.au
Support Programs at St Kieran 2021
Literacy Support
Literacy Support Coordinator: Mrs Vlinder Matsen
Mini Lit
MiniLit is an evidence-based, explicit and effective early literacy intervention program for teaching reading skills to children who are in the bottom 25% of the expected range for their age group in Year 1 or 2. MiniLit is a Tier 2 small group program (up to four students per group) within a Response to Intervention framework, but it can also be used on a one-to-one basis.
MacqLit
MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of students from Year 3 - 6.
It provides teachers with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
EMU
EMU Teacher: Mrs Liz Watson
EMU is an intervention program for students needing support in mathematics in the early years up to Year 2.
Students are identified for all support programs using data collected from standardised testing
St Kieran Enrichment Program 2021
Enrichment teacher : Mrs Ashleigh Shaw
The Enrichment program will endeavour to provide units of work that allow for the development and understanding of how gifts grow into talents. The activities undertaken in this program will involve the further development of a variety of skills including:
- independent working skills
- higher order thinking skills
- research skills
- self-regulation
- problem solving skills
- self-confidence
- intrinsic motivation
Enrichment Selection Process
Students are identified using the following data sources:
- PAT-R
- PAT-M
- AGAT
- Teacher recommendation and judgement
All students in Years Two to Five complete the AGAT (ACER General Ability Test) in Term Four of the previous school year. Students who are new to the school complete the assessment within two weeks of starting at St Kieran. All students in Years Three to Six complete the PAT-R and PAT-M tests within the first three weeks of the school year.
Ongoing inclusion in the program is not guaranteed. Rather, it will be dependent on your child’s ability to maintain the standard of work in his/her regular classes as well as the Enrichment Program. Review will occur each term with your child’s classroom teacher and the enrichment teacher. The Enrichment Program is in addition to standard classroom programs; some enrichment activities may need to be undertaken and completed outside of class time.
100th Year Celebration
It is not long now until our 100th Year Celebration and Open Day. There has been an amazing amount of work being done behind the scenes to organise this event and for it to be reflective of the St Kieran journey. We hope that you will join us in celebrating this day.
Welcome Back Family Picnic
Unfortunately this year the decision has been made that there will be no 'Welcome Back Family Picnic', we know this is a wonderful event that many families look forward to, and we hope we can have many more of these. However we are hoping that all families can attend the Centenary Celebrations on Sunday 21st March and be apart of this occasion.
Procedure to Deal with Incidents
Unfortunately at times during the school day there are incidents that may arise that require intervention or follow up by either the staff or by parents. To assist with this process we have issued through recent meetings the procedures for doing so, and while this hasn’t really changed, it may give you some strategies and a procedure to work through during these times of heightening emotions. The one element to remember is that mistakes can be made and as a Catholic school we forgive and reconcile and move forward together. This procedure will be located on our website in the near future.
School Fees have been sent via email
School fees have now been sent via email to all families. Please check your junk inbox as the email will come from an address beginning with "8750…" If you have concerns regarding the school fees please contact the office.
Kieran Connect Meeting
Our first Kieran Connect Meeting of the year will be on Tuesday 23rd February 6.30pm in the Upper Learning Area.
School Rules
The St Kieran School rules are listed below and as members of the community we are always expected to follow these. Can we ask that all parents talk to their children about these rules and if you like feel free to implement these at home.
- Be Safe - Always use your body and equipment in ways that will keep you and others safe.
- Be Respectful - Consider others and the environment, allowing people to treat others as they wish to be treated.
- Be Responsible - Take ownership of your actions, choices, learning and belongings.
When these rules are broken we follow the 1,2,3 Magic Program
What is 123 Magic?
123 Magic is a simple yet effective behaviour management program for parents and carers of children between 2 and 12 years of age. 123 Magic is easy to learn and it works. It’s an approach which allows parents to be firm yet caring when managing behaviour, while avoiding the most common pitfall - talking too much and getting too emotional in response to some behaviour.
When used effectively, 123 Magic eliminates arguing, yelling and smacking. It gives parents a simple and structured approach to:
- Controlling obnoxious behaviour (arguing, whining, fighting, tantrums)
- Encouraging good behaviour (listening, going to bed, homework)
- Strengthening their relationship with their child (praise, active listening, shared fun).
If you are interested in implementing 1,2,3 Magic at home there is a course for parents. Please see link below for more details.

Here is some feedback from last year’s presentation.
“The session was very beneficial to me particularly insights on how to check the sugar/salt levels on food labels. Am glad I attended.”
“It was a really informative session. I had a few take home messages which I’ve since been implementing:
- Switch to reduced fat dairy (all dairy!),
- Increase options like eggs, chicken, baked beans or leftovers in lunchboxes,
- White high fibre bread or fruit toast are actually quite healthy choices,
- Reading labels on products for fat, sugar and salt content,
- Substituting some of the fruit I am including in lunchboxes for veg instead, as we’re often good at providing enough serves of fruit in a day. It would be great to repeat it again in the future.”
YOUR MOVE STIRLING
Thank you everyone for your participation in the first ever St Kieran Your Move Travel Festival last Friday. It was wonderful to see the students engaged in their learning and trying something new. Here are some further details about how you can become involved in the Your Move Program and be in the winning to earn prizes!
Our school is part of the Your Move Stirling program which encourages students to walk, scoot or ride a bicycle to school. We are competing in the Your Move Schools competition against seven other schools. There are great prizes, worth up to $3500 to be won!
